Chile Approves Abortion With Restrictions

Chile approved the decriminalization of abortion in the country, but with certain restrictions.

In a decision that is classified as historical, the Chilean Constitutional Court approved that a woman terminate the pregnancy or abortion, only under these three circumstances: when the woman's life is in danger, when the fetus is not viable and if it is pregnancy as a result of rape, explains the note by BBCMundo.

The government of the country's president, Michelle Bachelet, is awarded the measure as a triumph. "Decriminalizing the termination of pregnancy on these three grounds is a basis of protection and dignity for each of our compatriots," Bachelet said after approval in the judicial system.

It should be noted that the approval of abortion had its detractors in Congress. Likewise, peaceful protests were reported on the streets of Santiago de Chile by groups against the measure.

The BBCMun do note indicates that a survey carried out by the body called Cadem showed that 71 percent of the interviewees were in favor of the three reasons to end a pregnancy.

Even, the note explains that with this decision of the Constitutional Court, Chile will no longer be on the list of countries that prohibit abortion. What are those countries? The United Nations records that El Salvador, Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, Malta and the Vatican are the places in the world where an abortion cannot be carried out.
