Italy has been moved by the miraculous rescue of 3 children who were trapped in the ruins of their home after a strong earthquake occurred on the island of Ischia on Monday.
Firefighters worked tirelessly, sometimes digging by hand, to free the minors, which included a 7-month-old baby and her two older brothers who were trapped when their home collapsed after the 4.0 degree jolt.
At least two people died in the tremor that occurred at 9:00 pm local time, and that has left 39 wounded, in addition to some 2,600 evicted, according to reports by the Associated Press.
The rescuers worked for 14 hours to free Pasquale, the baby boy who was buried in the remains of his room. A video circulating on Twitter showed the moment the baby emerged from the ruins with applause and shouts of joy, still dressed in his one-piece suit and very alert.
The parents of the minors also survived: the father was rescued by rescuers; and the mother, who is pregnant, was able to leave on her own. "It was a terrible night, I have no words to explain it," Alessandro Toscano told the RAI network, while rescuers worked against the clock to rescue their children. “The entire second floor of the house collapsed and the fire department took me out. They were fantastic."
