A romantic trip to celebrate a wedding anniversary turned into a real nightmare for a California teacher whose husband disappeared in the terrorist attack that occurred in Barcelona, Spain on Thursday.
Heidi Nunes, 40, said she was having a drink with Jared Tucker, 42, in a cafe on the Paseo de Las Ramblas, in the heart of Barcelona.
Her husband said he was going to the toilet and got up. That was the last time Nunes saw Tucker, as moments later someone pushed her toward a kiosk, where she was caught in a whirlwind of screaming people.
"When I realized there was screaming [and] screaming," Nunes told NBC. "They pushed me into a souvenir stall and I stayed in hiding while everyone ran screaming."
A van had climbed onto the iconic pedestrian walkway to run over a crowd, killing 13 people and injuring more than 100.
The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, which was not an isolated incident. Hours earlier, the police had shot dead five individuals carrying bombs at the Cambrils resort, some 60 miles from Barcelona. And on Wednesday night a woman died when a bomb exploded in the town of Alcanar, southeast of that city. Investigations continue.
Nunes, who had arrived in Barcelona from Paris and Venice, explained that her husband worked in construction and that although 12 hours have passed since the attack, she will continue to search.
The only hope she has left is a video that Nunes claims to have seen where an injured man very similar to her husband appears. But the doubt is still in the air, because on Friday the United States State Department confirmed that there is a North American citizen among the victims of the attack, plus one wounded man. Their identities have not been released.
