Members of the Passaic, NJ, community are unhappy that the Virgin of Guadalupe mural has been removed and refuse to have the altar built there in her honor moved.
All the walls that occupied the mural, a display of fervor and urban art, have already been painted gray according to the instructions given by the mayor of Passaic, Héctor Lora, reported the Univision 41 Newscast. Likewise, the local newscast explained that the mayor asked that the altar of the Virgin of Guadalupe, which was built in a tree in said locality, also be removed. This, because they do not have the proper permits and the area is public.
"It is a public place and it cannot be dedicated to a religion. I cannot authorize Buddhists or Hindus, for example, to put a place of prayer on public land. They are welcome to festivals and manifestations of faith, but they have to be temporary, "Lora told the Diario de México.
However, the community is emphatically opposed. Noticiero Univision 41 states that the members of the Guadalupan Stewardship of the Chapel of Passaic, as well as part of the community, affirm that if the Virgin of Guadalupe appeared there, it must remain there. It should be noted that a church near the site gave part of its land in case they want to move the chapel.
Mayor Lora gave the group until August 15 to remove the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, Diario de México reported.
