A 72-year-old man was arrested Thursday in a Bronx neighborhood in New York, accused of shooting his 28-year-old wife in the face.

Clarence White was arrested early Thursday at his home, located on Glebe Avenue in the East Bronx, after police responded to an emergency call at about 8:30 a.m.

Neighbors reported that they saw the couple arguing on the street in front of their home and that they subsequently entered it, being the last time they saw the victim who was identified by the New York Daily News as Dominique.

"They were out there … arguing," said a neighbor to the News Pix 11 network. "I don't honestly understand how this could happen," said another woman from the neighborhood, who has a predominantly Hispanic and African-American population, to the same source. "They both worked … I don't get it."

The woman was rushed to the Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, where she remained in critical condition until Thursday night.

According to various sources, the couple who have a young daughter had a history of domestic violence. Police authorities responded to another violent dispute at the family's home on May 23, but there were no arrests. Different neighbors told the press that the couple was "quiet", apparently having problems in their marriage and preparing to divorce.

According to police sources, White - who has a criminal record with different minor charges - will face charges of attempted murder, assault and criminal use of a firearm.
