A 37-year-old woman, accused of having killed her fiancé by removing the cap from the kayak in which he was sailing, has just pleaded guilty to murder for criminal negligence and is now facing up to 4 years in prison.

Angelika Graswald, originally from Latvia, was arrested in 2015 after the incident in which her boyfriend, Vince Viafore, 46, disappeared during a tour of the Hudson River in New York.

The man's body was found on May 23, 2015, and the woman has since faced charges of second-degree murder and second-degree murder on suspicion that he wanted to collect the life insurance policy on the deceased. Had she been found guilty on those charges, Graswald could have faced a life sentence.

Now, weeks before going to trial, the woman has reached an agreement with the prosecution accepting the crime of homicide for criminal negligence by admitting that she, in addition to removing the plug, must have perceived the risks and dangers of the water the day in which the excursion was made.

The woman admitted taking the cap off her fiancé's kayak moments before watching him drowning, prosecutors said at a hearing Monday.
