What had to be a joyous Christmas party last December in Hialeah, FL, ended in screaming, assaults, and a court case that nearly sent a former beauty queen to jail.

The confusing events occurred on December 21 at the home of Miss Miami Lakes 2017 Vanessa Barceló, who had organized the party at her home to promote her own pastry business.

According to his testimony, collected by The Miami Herald, when one of his cousins became intoxicated with alcohol at the party, he saw how one of the guests, a local DJ named David Duperón, raised the almost unconscious young woman to a bathroom.

Barceló -always according to his testimony- told her that it was not necessary, that she took care of the cousin, but Duperon ignored her. When she went to get paper towels, she saw him carrying the young woman to one of the rooms, where he began to undress her.

When the 27-year-old Miss came out for help, the DJ had locked himself in the bathroom with the semi-unconscious cousin, who in court stated that she didn't remember anything.

From that moment on, chaos erupted at the party. Barceló and his friends shouted at Duperón to leave the party, to which he refused, although they finally managed to get him out. That's where the aluminum bat appeared, to "intimidate" him, said the defendant, who denied that he ever hit him.

By the time the authorities arrived, Duperón was on the ground after receiving a punch that fractured his cheekbone and had received other assaults.

Barceló and his friends justified their performance arguing that the DJ had taken the bat from them and was threatening them. The attacked, on the contrary, said that after snatching the bat he had given it to a security guard at the residential complex.

According to the Herald, the truth is that the police report of the incident highlights that most of the guests, including the arrested, were "very drunk". When the Miss was asked why she had hit Duperon, she said she was "defending herself."

Given these events, the police decided to arrest the young woman and accuse her of assaulting her guest with the bat.

Fortunately for Miss Miami Lake, the judge who presided over the hearing on Wednesday decided to ignore the opinion of the authorities and heeded the defense's argument that the young woman acted within the law, protected by the controversial self-defense law Stand Your Ground”that removed the obligation to retreat before forcefully facing an apparent threat. So in the end, she dismissed the charges.

"Happy that today the truth has come out," Barceló said on Instagram after the court ruling. "Proud to defend myself and do the right thing in a difficult situation."
