Mariana Sifrit, the small protagonist of a rare health case, died Tuesday in Iowa of a meningitis contracted in a mysterious way.

The main suspect is a kiss.

The newborn contracted viral meningitis caused by the HSV-1 virus when she was less than a week old, and is believed to have been transmitted by a loving gesture.

According to The Des Moines Register, the life of Nicole and Shane Sifrit, from West Des Moines, has passed in the same month from glory to hell.

The couple started the month of July full of joy with the birth of Mariana and their wedding a week later.

It was precisely on that day of joy that they began to notice that their baby was reluctant, did not want to eat and they took her to the hospital, where they gave her the diagnosis that the little girl suffered from viral meningitis caused by HSV-1, which is transmitted by contact.

As both parents tested negative for the presence of the virus, the suspicion was that the little girl had caught the virus through contact with a third person who had approached her, probably to kiss her.

Her inconsolable mother, who has constantly posted photos and messages on her Facebook account about her little girl's health, also announced the sad news of her death.

"Thank you to all who have followed their journey and supported us through this," he wrote. "In her 18 days of life she made a great impact on the world and we hope with the story of Mariana that we save the lives of many newborns."

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, HSV-1 is the same virus that causes cold sores, but it rarely leads to viral meningitis. Could the case of little Mariana have been the exception?
