An Uber driver was fined for using the English language.
Carmen Hechevarría was leaving some passengers at said airport when a guard approached her and began a conversation with her in English. Faced with Hechevarría's confusion, an inspector approached him a few minutes later to issue him a fine in the English language. This reason was sufficient for Hechevarría to receive the fine. Why? An ordinance from the Miami-Dade Department of Transportation states that those who carry passengers in that county must have the ability to communicate in the language of Shakespeare.
Hechevarria told Univision News that she is concerned and echoed other Uber drivers "who bring the bread to the table," she said in an interview with the network.
Uber, for its part, issued a press release after the Hechevarría mishap in Miami came to light. “Uber is proud of the diversity of driving partners in the South Florida market. Uber asks the state's driving partners to follow all applicable local laws and regulations,”reads the letter posted in the Univision report. According to the same, the fine granted to Hechevarría could be revoked.
