A subject opened fire in the vicinity of a United Parcel Service (UPS) distribution center in San Francisco, California, spreading terror and taking the lives of three people and injuring two more.
The shooting occurred at about 8:55 a.m. local time on Wednesday, at a company parcel distribution center located in the Potrero Hill area where some 850 people work. According to witnesses, the suspect was dressed in the typical brown UPS uniform, but whether or not he was a company employee has not been confirmed.
According to reports by the AP agency and San Francisco Gate, the shooting began at the same time that the parcel service drivers were holding their morning meetings. Policemen immediately went to the site and confronted the gunman. However, he killed himself with a shotgun before he could be captured.
A witness to the events identified as Nick, who was on the third floor of the scene at the time of the shooting, said he heard noises "like metal knocks." Another UPS employee said he was able to see the triggerman, pistol in hand, and that he had identified him as a site employee. Police have already made a preliminary identification of the subject, but have not released his name. "This tragedy has touched so many lives," said Police Captain Toney Chaplin at a press conference.
"The company is saddened and deeply concerned about the employees who have been affected, the members of the families and the community that we all share," UPS said in an official statement. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by this incident."
The shooting occurred almost parallel to the shooting that also occurred this Wednesday in Alexandria, Virginia, where a subject wounded Republican Congressman Steve Scalise and three other people who were playing baseball in a park in that city.
