A young Ecuadorian man who was preparing to enjoy his Prom party was arrested that same day by immigration agents in the town of Ossining, New York.
Diego Ismael Puma Macancela, 19, and his mother had arrived in the United States escaping gang violence in their country, according to NBC 4 in New York.
Macancela was a high school student and was due to graduate on June 17. As his mother was arrested last Wednesday, the young man was hiding in a cousin's apartment.
But immigration agents showed up at that building the next day and also arrested him. According to a statement from the immigration authorities, an immigration judge had a deportation order pending against the young man since last November.
He did nothing wrong. He was doing the best he could for his future,”his cousin Gabriela Macancela told the television channel.
Democratic State Representative Nita Lowey, who represents the district where the Macancela school is located, asked Immigration in a statement to delay the deportation process for the young man so that he can graduate.
In that same sense, the also state representative Francisco Moya, of Ecuadorian descent, described as "unjustified" the action of the authorities and accused the administration of President Donald Trump of targeting "the most vulnerable."
Those signs of rejection were joined by schoolmates of the undocumented young man. An online application to avoid deportation already has more than 12,000 accessions.
