New York Fashion Week is almost at an end and as it has happened in recent years, the catwalks were full of Latin models who represent us incredibly in the fashion world. We have also seen parades of Hispanic designers such as Custo Barcelona and Carolina Herrera, who never disappoint with their proposals. But one of the most anticipated has always been the parade of Prabal Gurung, the designer of Nepalese origin, who in addition to showing incredible pieces, in recent years has also taken advantage of his parades to express his opinion on some social issue and this year he has not was the exception. His show served as a platform to protest against the strict immigration laws of the administration of President Donald Trump.
During his proposal for spring 2020, the designer presented a dream collection that included feminine dresses with floral prints, balloon sleeves and high-volume skirts, as well as feathered pieces and draped dresses with pronounced openings. But what captivated those present was the message that the artist sent in the final part of his show.
It was there when all the models came out on the catwalk, in which there were flags of different countries hanging from the ceiling, carrying beauty pageant-style bands with a message that said, Who is a true American?
"This is very personal to me," explained the artist. “Although my roots are with my family in Nepal, this country is my home. America is where my heart is. I am american".
Models from different backgrounds were also included in the show, to send a message of inclusion and diversity.
In previous parades, Gurung has sent very powerful social messages and even in 2017 included t-shirts with powerful messages from the journalist and feminist Gloria Steinem, so that women feel their unconditional support.
The designer definitely knows what he is doing and is doing it very well. Bravo!
