An African elephant killed Theunis Botha, one of the world's most experienced professional hunters and expert on large pieces, local media reported on Friday.

The incident occurred in a reserve located in the Gwayi region of Zimbabwe, West Africa, when Botha and her companions encountered an elephant and her young during a safari.

The man shot three of the young that were charging at them when a fourth animal wrapped him in the trunk and lifted him into the air. In order to protect him, another member of the expedition opened fire on the attacking specimen, which fell on top of the hunter causing his death.

Originally from Tzaneen in northern South Africa, Botha owned the Game Hounds Safaris company that specializes in leopard and lion hunting. Botha resided in the Limpopo province.

The man was known to organize trophy hunting for clients, particularly from the United States, who paid thousands of dollars to kill elephants, giraffes and other animals. He was also a pioneer in this region of hunting montería, a modality originated in the late Middle Ages in Europe in which hunters are guided by dogs to their prey, according to its website.

It was also revealed that Botha had a friendship with Scott van Zyl, another professional hunter whose remains were found in the stomach of two crocodiles that had devoured him during a hunt in Zimbabwe.
