María Elena Salinas confesses that some of the crime stories from her new show in English The Real Story - which premieres on April 24 on the Investigation Discovery network - have scared her. In fact, after conducting her first interview for this show, she arrived at her home in South Florida, turned on her alarm to feel more secure, and went through her apartment room by room that night.

“I get into my stories a lot. I am a person who is affected by everything I hear and see. The first time I did the interviews it was one of the most alarming and dramatic stories. It was of a woman who was found dead, beheaded, her heart taken out, her body mutilated. Her aunt was stabbed and her uncle hung from the garage,”says Salinas. "I was amazed who the person who committed the crime was and how no one had done anything to investigate her past."

According to her, she is now more aware of her own safety. “One of the advantages of these stories is that we learn a lot about human behavior and we see the clues to be more alert and know how to avoid these situations. Now I have more care and more advice for my daughters on how to take care of themselves, admits Salinas.

Although this is not part of the cases he covers in his new show, Salinas was personally affected by a crime that occurred in Miami in early April in the gym that he frequented. After being fired, his former coach Abeku Wilson opened fire at the gym where he worked at the Merrick Park shopping center, killing several people and injuring others. “She had been the person I trained with in the past. I said, 'It can't be.' She was the kindest person. He was a trainer for Cristián de la Fuente, Carlos Ponce, Ximena Duque, many people,”says the presenter about Wilson, who committed suicide that day. "It was a real shock for me to find out that this had happened."

According to her, reports on her Investigation Discovery program have also touched her on a personal level. "They are all stories that break your heart," he admits. “There is from the death of a girl of only three years old to another story of 11 women, most of them Hispanic, who disappeared and nobody cared. No one reported it until they found her remains on a remote mountain."

Another case he covers is that of the killing at the Pulse gay nightclub in Orlando, FL. Salinas reveals new testimonies from people who experienced the shooting firsthand and from people close to the murderer Omar Mateen.

The Mexican-American journalist will continue to co-present Noticiero Univisión and the Here and Now program for the same network. Making the crossover to the Anglo-Saxon market with her new show in English is something that excites her. "I am very excited," she concludes about this project. "It's something I've wanted to do a long time ago."
