Sherri Papini is back in the news. After the notorious case of her kidnapping and miraculous reappearance in California on Thanksgiving Day, new details just released have made her story even more complex.

People magazine recently obtained police records showing that this was not the first time that the 34-year-old mother had been reported to authorities by her family. Between 2000 and 2003, her mother alleged that Papini was hurting herself and blaming her for that abuse.

Last year, the mother of two children was found on Thanksgiving morning by a motorist by the side of a road about 150 miles from her California home. Papini was found with chains, beaten, and looking scared after being missing from her home for more than three weeks.

She told investigators at the time that she had been kidnapped by two Hispanic women on November 2 after jogging around her home. According to her, the women kidnapped her at gunpoint and spoke Spanish to each other most of the time. After meeting with her, her husband Keith Papini said that she showed signs of abuse, her body looked hurt and very thin - as if she had been hungry - her nose was broken and her long blonde hair had been cut.

As he said in an interview with the 20/20 (ABC) program in December, his wife was slowly recovering, but there will be traces. "It is something we will never forget," he said. "He literally lived through hell."

Since Papini's reappearance, authorities have made no arrests and no reason for the kidnapping has been confirmed. Area police are still investigating the case, they told People, and say they do not believe it is a false kidnapping testimony. The Papini family, meanwhile, has asked for privacy and declined to comment.

Papini's husband did tell People, however, that his wife would never fake his kidnapping. "I know that my wife would never leave me and not in a million years would she leave our children."

According to Officer Pat Kropholler, the mysterious incident will continue to be investigated. "I would not judge this case without having all the facts," he said. "Obviously it is an ongoing investigation and we cannot reveal everything."
