Brittany Diggs, a young woman from Birmingham, Alabama, became a true heroine last week by escaping from a kidnapper who had trapped her in the trunk of her car.

His risky escape was recorded in a security video, which has gone viral.

Now, the 25-year-old nursing student assures that she was able to escape thanks to an ingenious trick that she learned on Facebook and that required a simple insulin pump.

The story happened on the afternoon of March 14 when Diggs was leaving his apartment. As he approached his car, a man approached him and demanded money at gunpoint. She replied that she didn't have what the guy reacted to, forcing her to get into her own car to go from store to store trying to get money from the ATM with the victim's card.

“The whole time he was driving, he would yell at me from the front of the car, 'You're lying to me. I know you have something. Give me your money!”Recalled the young woman in an interview with the Today (NBC) program.

The guy told her to inspect the trunk of the car and put her there to continue driving and trying, unsuccessfully, to rob two more couples.

After circling, he stopped at a gas station, which the victim used to open the trunk door, jump out of the car and escape. "I just came up with this brilliant idea of using the light from my insulin pump, which is not very bright, but bright enough to see," she explained of her feat.

The light helped him locate the trunk latch and open it, something he had seen Facebook do.

"I try to forget [what happened] in order to continue with my life," he explained. "But this is the most terrifying situation I have ever had to deal with."
