What would have started as a bad taste joke could lead a minor girl or boy to jail after an 11-year-old boy committed suicide by believing that his girlfriend had killed herself after reading it on her social media. So far, a person who has not been identified by Marquette County Police in Michigan faces charges of maliciously using the telecommunications service and using the computer to commit a crime.
According to the Associated Press, the boy's mother, Tysen Benz, Katrina Goss, found the young man on Thursday, March 14, hanging from his neck in his room. Benz attempted his life after reading several messages from his girlfriend on social networks saying that he was going to commit suicide and the girl eventually pretended to have done so.
Other youngsters also participated in the macabre joke. Goss assures that when her son indicated on social networks that she was also going to commit suicide, none of them did anything to stop her or informed an adult to prevent this tragedy. "It all happened in about 40 minutes," said the 41-year-old mom. "It was fine and then I found it, I don't know what she said she did to herself."
Benz was taken to a nearby hospital and later transferred to the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, near Detroit, but died days later.
"Social media abuse, harassment, and pranks are a big problem," added the inconsolable mother. "The way they are used today, children are desensitized on social media and it really [this] hurts people."
For their part, the authorities have not specified whether the accusations presented are against the boy's girlfriend or any of the boys who participated in the joke. As this becomes clear, her inconsolable mother continues to struggle to understand what happened: “She made a joke about her own death. I don't know what led her to make such a twisted and sick joke."
