A 3-year-old girl lived with her dead mother for several days in an apartment in East Hartford, Connecticut, where she could only feed on cereal she found on the ground.
Authorities are awaiting the autopsy results of the 37-year-old woman, whose body was discovered by a social worker.
So far they have found no evidence of criminal action.
According to the Associated Press, the social worker came to the apartment to find out why the little girl had been without daycare for several days. Upon entering the home, he discovered with horror that the minor, who thought her mother was sleeping, had been alone with the body in the bathroom for several days.
Lt. Joshua Litwin reported that investigators in the case have not been able to determine exactly how many days the poor woman spent living in those conditions, but they do believe that "it definitely (was) more than a couple of days."
The girl, whose name was not revealed because she was a minor, was dehydrated, but had survived because she ate cereal that was lying on the floor. She is expected to recover and is currently admitted to a nearby children's hospital.
A neighbor pointed out that she had noticed that the volume of the apartment's television was very high and that she heard the girl cry several times, but ignored it because she thought the little girl was throwing a tantrum.
