Father Kills His Son With Stocking

Gene Anthony Quiñones-Rivera, a father who killed his two-month-old baby by drowning him with a stocking, will spend the rest of his life behind bars.

According to Florida court records obtained by People magazine, the 27-year-old man had initially pleaded not guilty but later did not contest the charge. A judge sentenced him this week to life in prison without parole.

In December 2016, police officers in Panama City said Quiñones-Rivera had arrived at the police station and told them how he had killed his son, Gediaelamir Rivera, in 2015. According to the documents in the case, he confessed that she had drowned the baby by putting a sock in her mouth to stop her crying.

Quiñones-Rivera told police that he "had to pay" for the murder. In a video interview he recorded from jail with the Panama City News Herald, the father said he had smoked marijuana that afternoon and was "angry" with Gediaelamir for crying. He added that he inserted the stocking into the baby's mouth and lay down to sleep.

In the interview, he adds that seven hours later he panicked when he checked on his son and saw that he had stopped breathing. The man, who had been trained as a nurse, tried to revive him with cardiopulmonary resuscitation and putting him in cold water - but nothing worked.

He then put the baby's body in a trash bag and left it in a desolate area in Bay County without notifying authorities. The baby's mother, Yanoshua Ramos-Meléndez, is also accused of aggravated murder. She is being held without bail and it is not yet known whether she will plead guilty or not guilty.
