Two Utah teens face charges of attempted murder after allegedly shooting a 14-year-old girl in the head, who was left dead for stealing her cell phone, iPod and a handful of dollars.
The 16-year-old boys were arrested last weekend and charged Tuesday with alleged responsibility for the shooting that has little Deserae Turner in a coma in a hospital, struggling between life and death, a crime that has horrified the local community.
According to documents in the case obtained by People, the suspects are accused of having lured the victim to a dry canal in the town of Smithfield, about 90 miles north of Salt Lake City, under the pretext of selling him a knife and the purpose of steal what he takes.
Apparently, according to the police version, one of the boys took out a.22 caliber revolver that he had brought in case he needed it and shot at point-blank range in the back of the girl's head, which collapsed. There they took the opportunity to take their cell phone, their iPod and armature.
"She is fighting for her life right now," family spokeswoman Jill Parker told People.
The state attorney's office confirmed its intention to try the accused as adults, although that step must be approved by a judge.
In questioning, one of the teens confirmed that the motive for his action was to rob the girl and provided authorities with "a written apology" for the victim's family.
As both defendants are minors, their names have not been released. For now they remain behind bars in a juvenile detention center, reported FOX 13 channel in Salt Lake City.
