Four workers from the Los Angeles Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) could be tried for negligence for failing to prevent the murder of the 8-year- old Gabriel Fernández, who was assigned to them.
The minor died in May 2013 after suffering months of torture and abuse at the hands of his mother Pearl Sinthia Fernández and the woman's boyfriend, Isauro Aguirre, according to prosecutors. They are both awaiting trial.
The possibility that victim welfare officials can go to jail has shocked social workers across the country, as those involved could face charges of neglect, child abuse and falsification of public records.
According to the authorities, Stefanie Rodriguez and Patricia Clement, in addition to their respective Kevin Bom and Gregory Merritt, ignored, ignored the constant evidence of physical abuse and minimized the injuries suffered by Gabriel, who ended up losing his life at the hands of his alleged abusers.
This is the first case in Los Angeles in which social workers face possible criminal charges for carrying out their responsibilities, according to the prosecution, and is one of only one of a handful of cases of this nature nationwide in the last decades.
