Thousands of businesses across the United States, from restaurants to beauty salons, have remained closed this Thursday or have opened with fewer staff than normal in response to the call for "Day without immigrants."
The protest is part of the movement to reject President Donald Trump's immigration policies and the growing immigration raids that have rocked the country.
Restaurants and the food industry in general have been affected by the closure, and even high-caliber chefs like Rick Bayless and Spanish José Andrés decided to close their stores.
"It was a very simple decision," Andres, who has restaurants in Washington, Philadelphia and New York, told NPR radio.
The protests and closings spread to other parts of the country. In Kansas City, she organized a march that reached the city's mayor's office, while in Charlotte, NC, the organizers of the initiative assured that up to 250 businesses had closed the doors.
In addition to the closings, there were also some marches across the country as New York and Los Angeles have been affected by the closings, cities such as Kansas City reported protest marches to the city council. “Thousands of immigrants stopped going to work; They are not shopping, eating at restaurants, buying gas, or streaming their children to school,”reporter Danielle Karson said this morning from Los Angeles. Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis said immigrants, regardless of their legal status, contribute 40% to the gross domestic product, equivalent to a few under the hashtags #DayWithoutInmigrants and #DiaSinMigrantes.
