Natalie Griffin's odyssey to survive is simply prodigious. The 19-year-old was traveling with her best friend Jenna Santos, through the Mendocino, California area, when the car Santos was driving slid down Highway 101 and fell into a frozen stream.

As reported by ABC Channel 7 in San Francisco, Griffin tried to get his friend out, but sadly she was stuck and no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't rescue her. So, when she saw that the back window was broken, she went to it and went out there. But her odyssey was just beginning.

The girl clung to a tree to spend the night, when she dawned she swam in the icy waters of the stream to the shore. There she went up a hill, where she was finally able to ask for help.

When the emergency crews arrived, she led them to the crash site, where the body of her best friend still remained.

"She had so many dreams in life," Griffin said of Santos.

Although the accident happened on Wednesday of last week, the news was not released until this weekend, when local media also reported that the two young women, who had studied together at Castro Valley High School, were returning from a trip through the Humboldt County, California.

The family put up a page on GoFundMe to help them with the funeral expenses.
