A Pakistani plane crashed on Wednesday near the city of Havelian, with 47 passengers on board, according to the country's news program Geo News.

The apparatus of the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) airline, which carried the Chitral-Islamabab route, disappeared from the radar just before the fatal outcome was known.

According to Aviation Secretary Irfan Ilahi, the plane could have suffered mechanical problems. "It is premature to say, but we know that the aircraft was experiencing engine problems," he told reporters.

On condition of anonymity, airline pilots have assured Geo. TV that there were previous complaints about the malfunction of the airplane's engine.

500 army units have moved to the scene of the incident, and 36 bodies have already been recovered from the wreckage of the plane.

A PIA spokesperson, Danyal Gilani, released the news via Twitter at 7:30 am “We regret to report that a PIA ATR-42 operated as (flight) PK-661, and with about 40 people, has lost contact with the control tower on its route from Chitral to Islamabad,”reads the message shared by Gilani.

For its part, the Pakistani news program has published some snapshots of the crash site, as well as an official list with the names of the people who were traveling on the plane.

According to a spokesman for the Department of Civil Aviation, Pervez George, no survivors are expected. "The rescue teams are heading to the accident area, and then we will know more"

The Geo News portal says the plane took off at 3 pm Pakistan time and lost contact with the control tower around 4:20 pm "shortly before it reached its destination."

Likewise, he notes that the pilot made an emergency appeal shortly before losing communication.

Among the passengers were two children.

The tragedy has occurred just a week after another device crashed in the mountains of Colombia, when it was transporting the Chapecoense Brazilian soccer team.
