In the midst of situations such as those we are living with the coronavirus that test the strength and determination of the human being, it is also beautiful to see how everything comes together to transmit hope, but above all to help those who need it most. For example, we have seen how many hospitals are in trouble because their protective materials have run out. For this reason, many brands and designers are currently working to provide these materials to doctors and nurses in countries such as Italy, Spain and the United States. But to our luck, not only they are contributing their grain of sand in the midst of this crisis, but also individuals who decided not to stand idly by like Cenia Beltré, who gives an example of solidarity.

The Dominican journalist has taken advantage of the quarantine to help so many health professionals by making masks in an artisanal way using fabric with bright colors and patterns, also an elastic to hold them. The idea is for hospital personnel to use these masks, which can be washed, on top of the disposable ones so that they can continue to be used.

“I learned to cook as a child. My mother taught me. So for me it was a natural reaction when I heard on television that there was a shortage, especially of masks and gloves,”Beltré said during an interview with A New Day (Telemundo) from her home in New Jersey. “I bought the materials and started making the masks. At first I made them with a different material and I was willing to distribute it locally. That was what I had in mind, going to the supermarkets”.

However, the journalist was afraid that people could reject her masks, which are made of two layers for greater protection, thinking that they were not safe or that they could be contaminated, but that thought did not stop her and using her own money she continued doing them together with his sister. When they are ready, Beltré gives them to a friend who is in charge of distributing them in the hospitals.

"The first delivery we made to him was 160 [masks]," he said. “These are about 50 that we finished last night. As you need, we will be there.”

Bravo Cenia. We need more people like you.
