Zara Makes Important Announcement About Its Sustainability Goals

Joining the movement for more environmentally friendly fashion, the low-cost fashion chain Zara has announced that all the materials it uses from 2015 will be sustainable. As announced by Pablo Isla, the CEO of Inditex, the company of which Zara is a part, by that date they are committed to ensuring that 100 percent of the cotton, linen and polyester used by their 8 brands is organic, sustainable or recycled.

The news is of tremendous importance since the Spanish company is, according to Forbes, the third largest clothing brand in the world, so a change of this magnitude in its production chain can have a tremendously significant impact at the environmental level.

In addition to this initiative on the fabrics with which they manufacture clothing, Isla has also announced another important change that fortunately more and more companies, and not only in the fashion sector, are joining: the war against plastic.

According to the report published by Inditex on its website, the company is committed to completely eliminating the use of plastic bags by 2020. By 2023, the challenge is to eliminate any single-use plastic, a measure initiated by other companies such as Everlane.

In addition, taking into account that every year millions of tons of clothing end up burning or in garbage dumps, the brand has already started projects to collect used clothing from its stores, which is already underway in some cities in Spain and China and will reach New York, Paris and London in September.
