More and more brands are joining the cause.
This time, Chanel has announced within a few hours of its Pre-Fall M'etiers d'Art show that it will no longer use exotic animal skins. Starting today, the brand will remove items that carry this type of material from its online sales points. However, it will take time for this to be accomplished in your store chain.
The decision was made because it has become increasingly difficult to obtain these skins ethically. This list includes the skins of lizard, crocodile, snake, manta ray and even fur (Karl Largerfeld, creative director of the brand, claims not to have used the latter for a long time).
As Bruno Pavlosky, President of Chanel Fashion and Chanel SAS, expressed in an interview with WWD: "The future of luxury products will be determined by the savior faire of our studio and what it is capable of doing." In the same statement, it was mentioned that the brand will seek more ethical options such as the development of the fabric and skins generated by the agri-food industry.
Chanel is the first luxury brand to join this cause, such as Asos, Nike, H&M and Puma who have already banned the use of exotic leathers in their products. Brands like Versace, Gucci, Michael Kors and Burberry have promised to stop using fur, however they have not declared the abandonment of exotic fur in their designs.
