Olga Tañón is happy on stage and gives her soul in every concert of her The One and Only Show tour. But the Puerto Rican singer has another passion: fashion design. The artist spoke with Ponte Bella about her designs, which have caused a furor on social networks.
"It's a hobby. I studied fashion design in Puerto Rico when I was 17 years old, which I did not practice later, only on myself. It is ironic and it seems like a joke that most of the time one comes out as the best dressed on the red carpets, it is with things that I made for myself and not clothes that I hired someone to dress me, "he confesses. "I said, 'Gee, then I have to keep cooking my little things.'"
Her new pieces were inspired by her daughter Gabriella. “I started with canvas bags because I love ecological things and it was at the initiative of Gabriella. We started making bags because she liked it, "he recalls. "She said to me: 'Mommy, I'm going to do a business and I'm going to help you.' I ended up making the bags myself and I don't have that big time to make them but I like it. Now I am cooking a jacket for a friend with angels, with wings, with roses”.
Tañón shares on his Instagram photos of the jackets, shirts and bags he has created. "They are called OT Canvas," he says of his line of bags.
“In the end I am not doing it to get rich, I am just having a good time. I have sold a few, every day we make several canvas. I am not a friend, I really like crafts and being at home. I love being with my husband and my children. I love to do the trick in the kitchen, with the paints. I tell my kids: 'Sorry, it's Mommy's time,'”she adds, laughing.
His creations are admirable. “I am using paint, Swarovski crystals, sequin inserts and thread embroidery. I am using roses, pearls, a little bit of everything”, he adds.
His love of fashion and sewing inherited it. That comes from my mom. She bought three yards of fabric and made a dress for each of the girls at home. We are three sisters and Mommy said that the stores were very expensive and she made our clothes for us. We dressed the same. I learned that from my mom, watching her cooking in her machine and also by hand. I would love to learn to knit. If I know how to embroider and I know how to embroider in stonework”.
Officially launching a fashion line is something you long for. "When we take out a clothing line it will be with the beautiful drawings that our daughter makes," she says. "That is a business that we not only want to leave her, but also involve other children with disabilities to have individual businesses."
