Before, long before putting makeup on Beyoncé, Mariah Carey or the Kardashians, Rokael Lizama slept in a car until someone crossed her path and changed her life forever. Learn about the story of the star makeup artist who is living her dream by backstage accompanying the megastar on her latest tour, On the Run II.
"My lucky break came when I started working with Lilly Ghalichi," recalls the makeup artist about her friend, influencer and queen of the networks with 3 million followers on Instagram and her own brand of tabs. "Back then I lived in my car and one day he said to me" look, I'm traveling all the time, why don't you stay at my house? So we made a deal, I would pay her in makeup services and in return she lived in her apartment. I went from living in a Mazda to living in a duplex in West Hollywood,”he says in this interview for Refinery 29.
After taking care of Ghalichi's makeup on his reality show The Shas of Sunset, he started receiving calls from celebrities like Mel B, La La Anthony and Kelly Rowland, the former Destiny's Child… One thing led to another and so, After first applying makeup to her mother, Tina Knowles, Lizama ended up doing the makeup for Beyoncé herself.
And they will wonder what it is like to be face to face with the Queen B of music day and day too. Lizama knows this very well. "She is super involved in everything she does, but especially in everything that has to do with her image," he says. "The most important lesson I have learned from her is work ethic and always challenge yourself to go to another level and do things you have never done before."
Without a doubt, after his personal experience, he is very clear that there are no impossible goals. “My story is proof that no matter where you come from or how difficult things seem, things can change in a second […] We all have talents to share with the world. I fight every day to be proud of myself and that my culture is also proud."
