With her we talked about her new projects, her fashion and beauty secrets and the responsibility she feels for being a good example for young Latinas.

The films in the Descendants saga, in which you play Evie, the daughter of the Evil Queen, have been a complete success. How do you evaluate your career so far?

These years have been beautiful. Every day I get up and do what I love the most, which is acting and singing. I am fulfilling goals that I always dreamed of. I am very grateful and very honored to do what I love, and I can't stand [the desire] for what is yet to come.

What can we expect from your first album?

I'm in the studio right now writing my debut EP, working with producers, amazing writers. For me, writing music is a process that I fell in love with when I was 10 years old. The most important thing is to be honest with my music because writing a song is giving a part of your heart to the world and I want each of the songs I release to be true to who I am. I like to tell stories, maybe something you didn't know about me, a love breakup. Being bicultural, I want my album to sound global and international.

Where would you say that musical streak comes from?

I don't remember a time in my life when I wasn't completely in love with music. I think it is thanks to my parents, my family that is very musical, we always do everything with music. On my grandmother's side, her sister was an opera singer in Washington and my mother's cousin is a pianist and plays jazz, so I think we have it in our blood.

Until now you have been known as a Disney star, but your next projects in the cinema set a very different course. Tell us about them

Yes, it's the next step, continuing to work on movies and working on a freelance tape is most exciting for me. I will be working with two directors that I admire very much in two roles that are completely different, but are true to who I am. They are two characters of strong women and that is very important to me because, from a young age, I made the decision that everything I would do would serve to set a good example for young women, empower them and never degrade them. From the beginning, even with Evie, it was important to show an image of strong and empowered girls.

What about your upbringing do you think kept you on the right track?

The greatest blessing in my life is my family, my mom, my dad, my sister, who are my rocks and remind me that every day is a blessing and that you should be grateful for every second because you only have one life to live.

How has being fully bilingual influenced your work?

It has been an impressive plus. When Disney hired me to play Evie, they thought it was amazing that I could speak Spanish, that [I'm] completely bicultural, and they've taken me all over the world doing press releases alone because I can connect with fans in Spanish, English and French. So for me being Hispanic has been an important plus in my career, an honor and pride.

Entering the topic of beauty, how do you take care of yourself?

I take good care of my skin. I take good care of the sun, I use 100 sunscreen. I exfoliate myself four times a week, I hydrate myself and on my off days I hardly wear makeup. All my creams are Obagi, the exfoliant, the moisturizer. I have never dyed my hair. I keep it in long layers, with my well-known look, which is the elegant and minimalist side stripe. I use the masks from the Nutritive line by Kérastase.

At your young age you already have a fashion style that is very sophisticated …

When I go to press [as] an actress, I go more classic, timeless, more feminine and when I go as a singer I make sure to add a bit of edge, like Gwen Stefani, who always looks classic, but with a rock and roll touch. I have always liked Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Angelina Jolie.

What are your favorite designers?

Giambattista Valli is the personification of femininity, ethereal, but fresh and contemporary. I used David Koma a lot. His lines are very flattering, cool and edgy. What Alessandro Michele is doing at Gucci is from a different universe because it is the perfect combination of high fashion for women and editorial with couture. I also love the [deceased] designer Azeddine Alaïa. When I was in Paris for Fashion Week, he invited me to his atelier and dressed me for a show. It was an unforgettable moment. Alaïa's [clothing] structure is very special.

What is your favorite garment right now?

I love denim and am obsessed with ear cuffs. I like Jennifer Fisher because they do very cool and modern things. My look of the moment would be boyfriend jeans, soft ankle boots, a T-shirt and a jacket. That's what I would put on a day off.

You have over eight million followers on Instagram. What do you think of the pressure that young girls sometimes feel to look a certain way?

I think that one fights against that since we are girls because there is a pressure to be prettier, skinnier, more perfect, but I think the most important thing is to know that true beauty comes from within, from beautiful hearts that do not judge, that they just love and that the rest will eventually fade away.

How do you see yourself ten years from now?

Cher has always been my greatest idol and her career is what I would like [to emulate] because she was able to do both film and music and that's where I see myself… doing world tours, movies, collaborating with brands, having my own line.
