As everyone already knows, the star of our September edition is Zoe Saldaña and with her we traveled to Havana, Cuba for a dream photo session. In the images, the actress of Dominican descent wore elegant dresses by designers such as Oscar Carvallo, Johanna Ortiz and Alexandra Vidal that were complemented by a natural mane. The famous stylist Marco Peña was in charge of leaving the protagonist of Avatar as a true Caribbean goddess. Discover how Peña achieved that casual look that is so fashionable and that made the artist wonder.
What was the idea behind Zoe's hairstyles?
The concept [was] superorganic and supernatural. For hair we respect its natural texture. She washed and conditioned her hair and what we did was to start [drying] her naturally and [putting] oil to control frizz and condition the tips that were a little dehydrated. As it was drying I was [adding] products. Then we just blow dry the root.
Did you use any tools with heat?
The first day yes to create a little more natural wave inside the hair and that was when we made the hairstyles collected so that it had a little more texture. That gave me the possibility of creating different looks according to what he was wearing. As they were super large outfits then I obviously picked up the hair on several of them because I felt it was the perfect match.
How would you define the collected ones?
Romantic, supernatural -respecting the natural texture of the hair- easy to make [and] to pick up. Even when collecting them she asked me not to wear rubber bands and to look as organic as possible.
And how about the style of the cover?
They asked me for much more natural hair. So what we did was we let it dry [naturally] and we were [adding] products like oil and cream. At the time of the photos, what we did was start to moisten it because that way we were going to get a much more natural wave. They wanted a supernatural look from a girl from Havana who had gotten up, dried herself naturally without much product and without much work. Her hair, being Latina and being Caribbean, obviously has this wonderful wave and [I] love to highlight that Latin hair texture.
What products did you use?
Ultra Velvet Pliable Smoothing Serum, by Difiaba and Thermal Spring Water, by Avéne.
Did they want to honor the culture of the island?
Yes, to the Caribbean race. I imagine it was perfect because he said he doesn't like to use hair products and that's the way I work with my hair too. I prefer to see how the hair reacts at the moment when I am working it and then go [adding] products if they are needed.
Zoe Saldaña.
What effect does the Avène product have on my hair?
It is so smooth. It is a spray that only wets what you need. For example, it did not wet the root. Since [it is] water and since [she] already had products that helped each time she [put it] picking up many more waves and it dried with a much more beautiful texture. In the end the hair had a very nice wave.
