During the shoot of our cover in Cuba, we chatted with makeup artist Vera Steimberg, who has spent years working with actress Zoë Saldaña and also took care of her makeup for our September issue.

How did you define the concept for Zoë's makeup?

We are always looking for a story, for me it is important to know what dresses to wear, what accessories to wear and what we are going to project, because everything has to do with makeup. If she's modern, if she's romantic, who is this woman and where does she come from? Is old? Is young? Is it a dream, is it reality, is it contemporary? It's like a movie, you read the script and from there you make the base of the character.

And what inspired you for the cover?

After talking about coming to Cuba, of everything that Cuba means, of everything that Latin culture means, and based it a little on the movie Live By Night, which was a character that came from the 1930s and 1940s, and what was in that era Cuba, we made the character. Obviously, we also spoke to the entire team to see what they were looking for, and they wanted to see Zoë as Zoë.

Let's talk about the makeup itself, how did you work the eyes?

I relied on eyes without eyeliner because we are in another era. They are determining details. I used a little more shade because the eyeliner is made but very smooth and without lines. At this time it was more romantic because people did not have much money to buy makeup, there were not so many colors, it was more basic. I did use the L'Oréal Voluminous mascara and the shades were more golden and brown and I used them a lot down and up to give it contour, but later with the lipstick with my finger I put it in the center [of the eyelid] and it gives that look like wetter because it is cream and gives contrast to the entire face.

What else did you use?

An RCMA palette that has a brown, the palette is neutral that has all the basic colors but has a dark brown and some highlights. I used the dark one to make the outline and another more golden.

How was the lip makeup?

I did two different ones. For the black and white dress I used one of Votre Vu that we put it with my fingers and it is more like a tint instead of being so marked, as to give it a little color on the lips but it is not so strong, very natural.

And in the image in which he wears a turban?

The night of going to the theater it was a glamor shot. Within the story she prepared to go out at that time, it was very glamorous. There it was with a Nars pencil and a stronger red lipstick. Women of that time put on red lips, a little darker in the eyes but with the same method, let's say romanticizing and without the line, simply with the shadow blurring it at the top and bottom, and a little more luminosity on the cheek part.

As an artist, do you like to experiment?

Sure, Zoë doesn't care. She loves to experiment, you saw, you put lipstick on her eye and she doesn't care. I am lucky to meet her and to have worked with her a lot of times and to have that relationship [of being able to act] freely. She is very adventurous about makeup and hair and costumes. She is a person who sits down and wants to know the story. It makes us all part of the history that we are going to make. There is always a reason, there is always a story.
