This Friday the movie Cinderella is released, a version of the animated classic, this time played by flesh and blood actors. We spoke to her costume designer Sandy Powell, a three-time Oscar winner, to learn more about the dreamy outfits the cast of this fairy tale is sporting. "I have to admit, I don't remember seeing the movie as a child, but the images are so iconic that they influenced [my designs] subconsciously," she explains to People en Español.
The entire wardrobe is inspired by the 19th century, although with details belonging to the different decades of the century. "Cinderella was the most difficult character to design, being the most iconic," says the designer. “I wanted to show that the dress is light and simple, even though it is huge. I also had to look good on the move, when she dances and when she runs away, so I used several layers of the finest fabrics that worked very well because they seemed to float.”

But the classic blue outfit isn't the only one that stands out in the production, the stepmother designs, played by Cate Blanchett, and the fairy godmother, played by Helena Bonham Carter, are as delicate as Cinderella's. "Lady Tremaine was fun to design, she had to create something glamorous but intimidating."

On the fantasy dress of the benefactor of the story, Powell adds: “The fairy godmother is for me the most classic character. I wanted it to look like it was magically lighting up so I incorporated a lot of LED lights that blinked at certain times.”

And what about the film's most famous accessory? “The crystal shoe was the greatest challenge of all. I wanted it to be desirable but impossible to wear, so it had to be real glass. I worked with Swarovski, and they found a way to create a real-scale but delicate shoe. The shape is inspired by a shoe that I found from 1890 in a museum with an impossible heel”.

And it was not the only one. In 2012, on the occasion of the reissue of the animated film, Christian Louboutin created the “Cinderella” shoes, made with delicate tulle and crystal butterflies, and which in early March, the current protagonist Lily James, modeled at the world premiere from the movie in Hollywood in an Elie Saab dress that looked like something out of the story itself.

On this occasion, Disney asked nine famous shoe designers such as Jimmy Choo, Charlotte Olympia and Nicholas Kirkwood, among others, to come up with shoes inspired by the film, with beautiful and incredible results.

But it is not only through shoes that this story lives which has influenced fashion and beauty, giving rise to all kinds of products. Crystal shoes are beautiful but impractical, so for fans of the story, nothing better than a crystal shoe pendant like the Hot Topic brand.

In the world of cosmetics we also find many options that drink directly from the film, such as Morgan Taylor's collection of enamels in six shades of pink and blue that will dress your nails with the color range of any fairy tale.
