September is a month of changes, autumn is coming, the first outerwear, we renew our closet … This month is also a good time to change perfume and explore new fragrances that delight us. That is why the well-known Spanish perfumer Alberto Morillas, creator of Midnight Romance for Ralph Lauren as well as other iconic perfumes such as 212 by Carolina Herrera, Acqua di Gio and CK One, helps us to better understand this millennial beauty product.

The ancient Egyptians already used perfumes, why are they so important?

The sense of smell has power to influence the moods, behaviors and thoughts of those around you.

How is a perfume created?

I am always exploring new smells, in fact I travel the world in search of ideas that later materialize in my perfumes. [I work to] bring a story to life. In the process of creating, I use the most magical products, I take notes by hand that I send to the laboratory where the chemical formula is created. My wife and daughter are the first to give me feedback on my creation.

What does a woman's perfume have to have?

A women's fragrance must be complex, thoughtful, simple and feminine. Perfume is the shape, what is inside the bottle, but the important thing is when a woman puts it on because it takes life.

Where should we apply it?

It should be sprayed on wrists, elbow creases, neck, and even clothing to keep it longer. But it all depends on the circumstances. Perfume for a meeting is not the same as for dancing.

When we get used to a scent, like that of our own fragrance, goes unnoticed by our nose, does that mean we should use more?

Large doses of perfume should not be applied because aromas in large quantities tend to overload the nose and have an unpleasant effect on its receptors. It can even cause headaches.

How long does a perfume last on the skin?

Fragrances last between three and four hours on the body.

Why does the same perfume smell different on each person?

Your body chemistry affects the reaction of the different notes on your skin. Everything that affects the natural smell of the skin can change how a perfume smells on you.

How long should we keep a bottle of cologne?

Perfumes must be rotated. It is preferable to have medium bottles to finish the fragrance faster than later. You have to have several fragrances and explore them to be able to choose the set of perfumes that works for you.

What scent is the star of your latest Midnight Romance perfume?

From Ralph Lauren, Honorine Blanc and I were commissioned to create a completely new liquid that would bring the story to life: passion, sensuality and mystery. I immediately thought about including the pink peony, which captures the various facets of femininity. It is a voluptuous flower but in full bloom, the petals are fragile to the touch. Its aroma is soft and feminine. It is the key ingredient [in contrast] to black vanilla that grabs attention and shows confidence. It also has notes of raspberry, jasmine Sambac, and Italian bergamot.
