In a new cover interview with The Wall Street Journal Magazine, Selena Gomez spoke candidly about her struggles with mental health. The “Lose You to Love Me” singer - who releases her new album Rare on Friday - said in the story that going to therapy for over six years has transformed her life. Gomez admitted that becoming internationally famous as a teen was "scary." Her busy work schedule, the pressure of the spotlight, and her struggle with lupus led her to feel anxious and depressed. "My highs were really high, and my lows would take me out for weeks at a time," she said. "I found out I do suffer from mental health issues, and, honestly, that was such a relief."

Getting professional help has made all the difference, she added. "I realized that there was a way to get help and to find people that you trust," she said. "I got on the right medication, and my life has been completely changed." Therapy also made her feel more confident. “I had low self-esteem, and that's something I work on continuously. But I feel so empowered because I've gained so much knowledge about what was going on mentally.”

In 2018, Gomez admitted herself to a treatment center for mental health. “I think that we are better when we tell the truth and, so, this is my truth,” she began her acceptance speech when receiving the 2019 McLean Award for mental health advocacy. “Last year, I was suffering mentally and emotionally, and I wasn't able to stay all that kept together. I wasn't able to hold a smile or to keep things normal.”

Her journey to feeling at peace today hasn't been an easy one. “It felt like all of my pain and my anxiety washed over me all at once and it was one of the scariest moments of my life,” she continued in her speech. Looking within and facing her emotions was a challenging process. Terrified, obviously, because the veil was lifted, but relieved that I finally had the knowledge of why I had suffered for so many years with depression and anxiety. After a year of a lot of intense work… I am happier, I am healthier, and I am in control of my emotions and thoughts more than I've ever been. So I'm very happy about that!”
