Just one day after a 5.8 magnitude earthquake hit Puerto Rico, a second earthquake - 6.4 magnitude - has struck the island. It struck five miles southwest of Tallaboa at 4:24 am ET, according to the United States Geological Survey. At least one death has been reported and many homes and buildings have been destroyed; Puerto Rico's governor Wanda Vázquez has declared a state of emergency. Landmarks of the island, like the window-shaped rock formation on Playa Ventana and the Inmaculada Concepción church in Guayanilla, have collapsed.
This is the second consecutive day that residents have woken up to a terrifying natural disaster. The Monday earthquake began at 6:32 am ET near Indios, with some homes being damaged in Guánica and a house collapsing in Guayanilla. Photos of homes with cracked walls have surfaced on social media and Puerto Rican celebrities have reacted to the tragedy.
Reggaeton singer Daddy Yankee shared a photo of a group of Puerto Ricans forming a circle of prayer. "Powerful image," he wrote in his caption. Prayer is always the solution. Humiliating ourselves before our Lord grants us peace, hope and strength in facing the challenge. I join this prayer chain with my family.”
Merengue queen Olga Tañón also shared the following message on Instagram: “Puerto Rico and the entire world need prayer. What is happening is serious and we have to unite more than ever. … We have to pray and act before it's too late. Mother Earth is roaring.”
Nicky Jam also shared a post illustrating first-aid items - like water, a flashlight, and rubbing alcohol - that residents should have ready in a backpack in case they need to evacuate in a hurry. “Having this ready may save your life,” the image reads. "Puerto Rico, God is with us," the singer wrote. "We won't stop praying."
Luis Fonsi expressed his heartbreak with this message: “Papito Dios, protect the island. It's shaking stronger than yesterday. There are many neighborhoods without electricity. Another test !!! Strength, my people. Remain prepared and united.”
Marc Anthony also showed support, posting to Puerto Rican flag photo on Instagram with the message: “Puerto Rico, I am praying for you. God bless you."
