Diane Guerrero: “Stay Informed And Be Educated” During This Political Climate

Since Donald Trump announced his candidacy for the presidency nearly two years ago, actress Diane Guerrero has been unafraid to stand up for her beliefs. The In The Country We Love author has kept the conversation going on immigration reform and marched for equality at the Women's March on Washington last month.

In 2014, the 29-year-old actress, wrote a Los Angeles Times op-ed, in which she revealed she was the daughter of undocumented immigrants and watched her parents be detained and deported back to their native Colombia at the age of 14.

Like many of Hollywood's biggest stars, Guerrero went into a state of shock when president Donald Trump authorized an immigration ban that temporarily prevented legal residents from entering the United States legally and barred refugees from resettling in the United States. That was when the Colombian-American actress took to Instagram last week to repost Hidden Figures star Janelle Monae with a picture captioned “We are not America's Nightmare. We are the American Dream.”

We caught up with the Orange is the New Black star amid New York Fashion Week where she offered words of encouragement for anybody frustrated with the current political climate. "I know a lot of us are feeling a little uncertain of the times and what we could do in order to make this place better for ourselves and our family," she said. "All I have to say is to stay informed and be educated. Be active.”
