As if you needed any validation of Liam Neeson being the right pick for the voice of the titular monster in the upcoming film A Monster Calls, the Irish-born actor lends his famous gruff voice for a dramatic reading of the first chapter in Patrick Ness' acclaimed novel.

In A Monster Calls, a young boy (Lewis MacDougall) makes friends with a giant monster tree. The “monster,” played by Neeson, then protects the boy as he copes with the illness of his mother (Felicity Jones) and strict rules of his grandmother (Sigourney Weaver).

“A Monster Calls deals with how to grow as a young boy and where you fit in the world - and we've all been through that. We all have tales to tell,”Neeson previously told PEOPLE.

For clips of the film and to hear the first chapter of A Monster Calls, check out the video above and catch the big-screen adaptation in limited theaters on Dec. 23, and opens wide on Jan. 6.
