Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a special Mexican tradition to celebrate the memory of those souls who are no longer with us. The colorful festivities are marked with highly elaborate homemade altars, candied skulls and, of course, dressing up as “La Catrina.”

“La Catrina” has become one of the most iconic symbols of the celebration. The drawing was created by printmaker and illustrator José Guadalupe Posada in the early 20th century and originally was meant to satirize the upper class.

The tradition is becoming more and more popular in the United States. In fact, many people take on re-creating La Catrina as a Halloween costume. Chica teamed up with makeup artist Shaina Eve Cin to help us create a Día de Los Muertos look with a fun twist.

Shaina got to work with a makeup look that departed from the traditional black and white, instead using shades of teal and blue. Her step-by-step instructions make it easy to recreate the look at home.

The result is unique, perfectly combines tradition with originality. Check out the tutorial above!
