Labor Day weekend might be the unofficial end of summer, but pool and beach season keeps going until September 21st and everyone is trying to squeeze in a last bit of fun in the lingering heat. In order to face autumn with great skin, Dr. Alicia Barba shares her skin-care tips for the coming weeks.
Chlorine and salt water can be really drying for your skin. How should you protect yourself and what can you do after to rehydrate?
“Be conscious that after a day at the pool or the beach your skin has taken a beating, even if you have worn sunscreen. Chlorine strips the skin of its natural moisturizers and some sunrays still penetrate even the best sunscreen. Be sure to always rinse the chlorine off your skin using a gentle exfoliating cleanser to hydrate skin. Apply a rich moisturizer everywhere before going to bed.”
After being in the water for a long time, the skin on your fingers and toes can crack. What are some ways to treat this problem?
“Wrinkling of the fingers and toes after long-term exposure to water is a true sign of dehydration and drives home the point that long exposure to water actually draws out moisture from the skin and washes away all of your natural moisturizers. The best way to avoid this is to limit the contact with water, especially water with extreme temperatures like a hot tub. If this cannot be avoided, use a rich cream or ointment as a barrier before contact with water, and always follow up with a rich moisturizer.”
What are the skin care products you should always bring in your bag when going to the pool or beach?
“The skin care products I never forget when going to the beach or pool are deodorant, lip balm, sunscreen, a hat and polarized sunglasses. Choose a deodorant like Dove Advanced Care Antiperspirant that will keep you feeling fresh while also moisturizing your skin. Look for a lip balm that also has SPF protection. Opt for a sunscreen that is SPF 30 or higher and reapply every two hours. Polarized sunglasses that protect against UVA and UVB are essential. We all know that UV light is terrible for the skin, but we often forget to protect our eyes.”
