When Karla Monroig and Tommy Torres announced their separation in February of 2018 after 10 years of marriage, the news came as a surprise to many. The actress and TV host, 40, and the singer, 47, were one of the most beloved Puerto Rican couples in the entertainment industry and shared a daughter in common, Amanda, 6. “Our separation was one of the most difficult and painful times of my life,”Monroig tells People en Español in an exclusive interview for its new issue, where she also talks about their reconciliation and new life together.
The singer was by her side when Monroig celebrated her 40th birthday in Las Vegas, where the couple got married in 2008. Being in Sin City and walking around the casinos and hotels brought back memories of when they tied the knot a decade earlier in a romantic and intimate ceremony. "We relived very special moments, we really enjoyed that trip," she recalls. They are also enjoying every second together in their home in Miami and celebrating their love “one day at a time” after months apart. "When there is love, everything is possible," Monroig recognizes.
The actress - who has a starring role in a soon-to-be-released movie filmed in Puerto Rico - also got certified as a life coach and says the months she spent separated from Torres were a journey of self-discovery. "When we took that pause we realized what we really wanted and were able to work on the things we had to work on," she recounts. “And when we decided to take this step - because we love each other, because we love our daughter, because we believe that as a family we still have a long way to go - we took that step fully. We moved back in together, we started from zero”she adds of their reconciliation.
What was the reason behind the breakup? “It was perhaps because of our differences. There were no third people involved in either side,”she assures.
After spending Christmas together as a family last December, the romantic spark reignited. Although she hopes to grow old with the “Quédate” singer - like they both envisioned when they walked down the aisle - she says they are both fully living the present and making every minute together count: “In the here and now we are happy.”
