In her attempt to cross the border to reach the United States, a pregnant immigrant died after falling from the border wall near El Paso, Texas.

Guatemalan authorities said the young woman was taken by the Border Patrol to a hospital, where she underwent an emergency caesarean section to try unsuccessfully to save the boy. The accident had caused the mother to have a cerebral hemorrhage, a pelvic fracture, and lacerations of the liver and kidney and after several surgeries she died on Tuesday.

The United States Office of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said in a statement that the culprits in Girón Luna's death were human traffickers who "encouraged" her to scale the wall.

The head of the El Paso border patrol center sector, Gloria Chávez, assured that the US authorities are working with Mexico "to find those responsible for endangering these lives."

The young woman was traveling in the company of a 26-year-old man who is listed as her partner and father of the creature and who is in US custody, the New York Post reported.

The media in Guatemala revealed that Girón Luna was a social worker and winner of a beauty pageant who had started her journey to the United States to help her family financially.
