The censorship of a commercial about postpartum care - which was not broadcast during the Oscars Awards gala for being supposedly "very graphic" - has caused controversy, the New York Post reported. The Frida Mom brand ad shows a newly delivered mother painfully rising from her bed as her baby cries in the crib and slowly walks to the bathroom to wash up and change into her intimate and gauzy undergarments to wear while recovers from a cesarean section.
The ad shows the stark reality of the early days of motherhood, with an exhausted and sore mom and a crying newborn. "Postpartum care doesn't have to be that difficult," says the ad, which then shows off a convenient Frida Mom brand postpartum care product kit.
Brand President Frida Mom spoke to Today Parents, criticizing the Academy decision not to broadcast the video for being "very graphic." "We were very surprised to see that feminine hygiene was placed in the same category of weapons, ammunition, sexually suggestive nudes, religion and politics," said Chelsea Hirschhorn, referring to the Academy rules on commercials that it censures. "I was surprised that in this modern day someone within the academy and ABC organization put in writing that feminine hygiene was comparable to some of these more offensive categories within the advertising industry."
