Due to a petition on Charge.org, the Kmart chain in Australia was forced to withdraw a wedding dress for girls between the ages of four and six from sale.
For Shannon B, who originated the protest, the costume was most inappropriate and helped normalize forced child marriages, a serious problem faced by many communities around the world.
"Tell Kmart that this is more than inappropriate and offensive. They have a social responsibility to remove it from sale immediately. Please help me get this message to Kmart by signing this petition,”Shanon wrote. "Every year, twelve million girls (some as young as 6 years old) are sold or married by their families without their consent."
In five days, Shannon had already obtained more than 500 signatures from people supporting her cause. "Through this petition, we have made Kmart realize its responsibility as a global franchise."
Kmart apologized for the controversy generated after removing the costume from its store and assured that it was not its intention to offend anyone. But many other parents disagree and another platform was opened with the opposite idea that carries almost four thousand signatures.
“There is nothing wrong with a wedding costume. I have daughters and if my girls decide they want to dress as a bride I will not stop them. When withdrawing it from the sale, the dreams of the girls who like my daughters want to dress as brides for Halloween have also been taken away”, they affirm in the petition.
