2020 is an important year in the career of Dominican singer Leslie Grace. Not only because her musical career is on the rise with various projects to launch music in English, but this summer she will debut as an actress in the movie In The Heights, inspired by the musical by Lin Manuel Miranda. To celebrate this moment in her career, we invited the well-known bachatera to be the muse of our March beauty issue. We moved to the Dominican Republic, a country of paradisiacal beaches and charming colonial architecture, to show you on the face of this beautiful Dominican the sexiest makeup trends of the season. This is what he told us.
In a few months you will debut as an actress in In the Heights, a movie inspired by the musical of the same name by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Tell us about that experience
It was the most beautiful experience of my life. I learned too much. It was a challenge for me because it has been my first project as an actress and, above all, with people who have done it for as long as Jimmy Smits and Daphne Rubin-Vega, and other young talents like Anthony Ramos and Melissa Barrera. They gave me that motivation to give my best and at the same time they opened the door to teach me everything they know.
How does this project connect with the way you are running your career?
In the Heights could not have come at a more perfect time in my career and in my life. Aside from being an incredible project, we all feel a responsibility to tell the story of those who live between those two worlds: being Latino and being born or raised in the United States, and what the American dream is. In the Heights somehow reflects what I have experienced. I believe that in my career I have demonstrated the different facets of who I am as an artist and as a person. Acting and my music in English have always been part of my plans. I think the time has come for people to get to know that side of me and I have prepared a lot and sacrificed a lot.
How do you think your style has evolved through the years?
For good, thank goodness! I love collaborating with people who bring something new to my way of thinking about fashion. Fashion for me is something fun and another way to express yourself. What I am experiencing in a moment will always reflect what I have on.
What is your philosophy regarding clothing?
There is a quote from Coco Chanel that says: 'Simplicity is the key to elegance'. During my career I have learned that many times less is more. I like to wear pieces that are statements instead of putting everything on top. I like to try something that propels me out of my comfort zone.
In your day to day, how is your routine?
In my day to day I am simpler. I try not to put on too much makeup, I take care of my skin. You are what you eat, so I try to eat everything that has antioxidants. Naps are my life! If you don't take care of yourself, that is reflected even if you put on the most expensive skin or go to such a place to fix your life in one day. I try to be good to myself because the life of an artist is [demanding].
You grew up in a salon, how do you take care of your hair?
For [my family] it is super important to have careful hair. I am at a time when I want to use my hair as an accessory to express myself, as I do with my clothes or my songs. I want to free myself from the pressure of keeping my hair in a certain way.
How do you manage to stay focused on show business?
Having [close] to the people who know me. Spending time alone with myself and talking to God, defining what I want and what my purpose is. What would hurt me the most would be to reach the end and feel that I did not take advantage of the resources that life gave me and [not have given] the best of me. So I live with that responsibility and the purpose of being better every day.
