A Florida grandmother has been sentenced to 21 years in prison after pleading guilty to the murder of her two eight-year-old grandchildren. In April last year, Dorothy Flood admitted to having shot each of her grandchildren twice before attempting suicide, according to PEOPLE.

The twins Jaden and Jordan Webb suffered from severe autism, wore diapers and had limited communication, according to prosecutors. Jordan also suffered from digestive problems and Jaden had problems related to his asthma.

The children had been cared for by their grandmother after their mother's death three years earlier, so Flood, 56, had quit his job in order to devote himself to them full time.

"Somehow, something broke," Chandra McCord, a former colleague of Flood from Tucson University Medical Center, told a local television channel. "My first reaction was, of course, no, it can't be the same Dorothy we met."

According to Grandma's defense attorney, Flood was mentally unstable and wanted to end the pain and suffering of his grandchildren.

She said in her letter that she took the gun out of a drawer, she said: 'Sorry boy, we are not getting better. They can't help us, so we're going to go, the three of us, '”according to the prosecutor.

The grandmother reportedly shot Jordan in the stomach and Jaden in the chest before shooting both of them in the head. Next, she tried to kill herself but the pistol jammed and she decided to take some pills. All three were found at her home in Tucson on April 4, 2019. The medical team was able to resuscitate her, while the children were pronounced dead at the crime scene.

I loved those children. I never intended to hurt them. I am so sorry I did,”Flood said during the court hearing where her sentence was pronounced.

Initially, Flood was charged with first-degree murder, but she settled with the prosecution and pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter.
