A former Argentine boxing world champion was sentenced Thursday to 18 years in prison for sexually abusing his daughter.

Carlos Baldomir, 48, abused the girl for two years starting at age 7, the BBC reported. He was arrested in November 2016 and spent almost three years in preventive detention.

The former lawyer had been detained since November 18, 2016, when his ex-wife and mother of his daughter filed the complaint at the Orientation Center for Victims of Family and Sexual Violence in the central province of Santa Fe.

Baldomir was found guilty of the crimes of sexual abuse with qualified carnal access and severely outrageous sexual abuse and promotion of corruption of minors.

The boxer, who lost his title to Floyd Mayweather, denied the charges and his lawyer called the sentence "excessive", according to local media.

Baldomir held the World Boxing Council title for 10 months in 2006 after defeating American champion Zab Judah in January. He defended his title against Italian-Canadian Arturo "Thunder" Gatti before losing to Mayweather in November of that year.
