A man in Washington state has tested positive for the presence of the coronavirus in his body, making it the first case in the United States of this dangerous respiratory virus whose first manifestations were detected in China.
According to US health authorities, this is a patient who had recently traveled to Wuhan City, considered the epicenter of the outbreak of this new virus. After returning to the United States on January 15 and reading about the virus, he went to his doctor for 4 days to have a test, which he tested positive.
The patient's health, who resides outside of Seattle, "right now can be described as very healthy," said director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the Center for Disease Control, Nancy Messonnier, according to People.
Despite this, as a precautionary measure, he is hospitalized in a local hospital in Everett, WA.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), coronaviruses are a family of viruses that cause diseases ranging from the common cold to more serious illnesses and can be transmitted from animals to people, such as civet cats or dromedary camels, among others.
On December 31, 2019, the first case was reported in Wuhan City, Hubei Province of China. Symptoms include fever, cough, shortness of breath, and, in more severe cases, pneumonia or actual failure. A picture that can lead to death.
The Chinese authorities have so far attributed 6 deaths to this virus and have declared the existence of almost 300 cases. WHO experts will meet this coming Wednesday to assess the situation internationally and take steps to prevent the spread in China and other countries.
