Police are investigating the cause of a fire that forced firefighters to rescue a 47-year-old woman and her 3-year-old son from their home in California's Ventura County.

According to local media, Maricela Magaña Ruiz was arrested by police hours after the rescue and after firefighters found her tied to her legs in a room in her home. The little boy had also been tied up and with a bag on his head in another room. The authorities accused her of endangering the life of the minor.

Police responded to a call for help last Sunday in which it was said that a woman was tied to a bed and a small boy was in another part of the house, according to authorities.

After the rescue and conducting an investigation, it was determined that the mother had tied the boy's hands and covered his head with a plastic bag, leaving him in a room on the second floor, according to People.

"He was instructed to stay still and after nothing happened he left the room where he was and found the house full of smoke," Sergeant Allen Macías told People.

Ruiz was found by firefighters on the third floor and after being questioned by investigators, she was arrested early Monday morning. You could regain freedom by paying a $ 500,000 bond.

"What we know is that there is a horrible battle for custody [of the child] between the suspect and the boy's father," Macías explained.
