A mother is accused of locking her 11-year-old son in a car and setting him on fire, authorities in Monroe County, Michigan say.

The woman, Sherrie Richter, 48, allegedly tied her son's hands, locked him in the vehicle, and set the trunk on fire. She and her son were taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation. The mother was then transported to the Monroe County Jail where she is being held on charges of attempted murder and arson.

According to The New York Post, authorities received a call from a 50-year-old man early Tuesday morning reporting that his wife may have harmed his son. After a brief investigation, the family's car was found on fire at LaSalle's Roselawn Memorial Cemetery.

"The mother attempted to set fire using gasoline inside the co-pilot area where the boy sat," the sheriff's office said in a press release. The fire did not light as the boy struggled to free himself from the vehicle, the part continues, and it was then that the mother released the boy from the car and they moved away from the fire. Then they went to a cemetery employee who helped the boy remove the bandages that held his hands.

Although both the mother and the son were safe from the event, the reasons that led her to commit the atrocity are unknown.

After her imprisonment, the woman requested that a public defender be assigned to her.
